UPDATED 10/3/17: Petty passed away late last night, as confirmed by his longtime manager.
UPDATED 10/2/17 8:40PM: Current reports suggest Tom Petty is alive and either on or off life support at Santa Monica hospital following a heart attack. It is not known at this time whether the reports that he has no brain activity are valid. We’ll update as we have new information.
Multiple sources have confirmed that legendary rocker Tom Petty has died of cardiac arrest after being taken off life support about an hour ago. This is absolutely devastating and heartbreaking news for a music world that has lost too many people over the last year, with the biggest blows coming in the past couple months with the eerily similar suicides of Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington, and I personally am in fucking tears writing this right now. I missed an opportunity to see him on his two nights in NYC back in July – his representatives never replied to our request – and now, sadly, Tom Petty is gone.
All reports indicate that Petty was rushed to Santa Monica hospital earlier today in full cardiac arrest and subsequently placed on life support, but was removed after having no brain activity. Petty’s career took off in the early 1970’s with his band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, with which he released many hit singles such as Free Fallin’ – which I happen to have turned up full blast as I write this, along with American Girl, Runnin’ Down a Dream and Mary Jane’s Last Dance among many others. Petty and his band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. The band just finished their 40th anniversary tour, with Petty hinting that the tour might be his “last big one”.
Sadly, that tour turned out to be his last one. Full stop. Rest in peace, good sir.
