PREVIEW: Dropkick Murphys + Rancid Set to kick off “From Boston to Berkeley”

Boston-based Irish punk band Dropkick Murphys are set to hit the road once again following their 11 Short Stories tour from earlier this year, which we covered here, on a lineup that also features co-headliners Rancid out of, you guessed it, Berkeley, CA. The tour marks the second trek this year for the Murphys, who released their 9th studio album back in January – review here and their first trip to NYC’s newest addition, Ford Amphitheater in Coney Island.

The tour kicks off tomorrow, July 27th, at Darling’s Waterfront Pavilion in Bangor, ME, so it’s not technically from Boston to Berekely but hey, who’s counting? The tour does make its way to Boston/Brockton the night before NYC, so we’ll let them slide. For DKM’s part, they’re still supporting 11 Short Stories so it’s their set will feature quite a few tunes from that album, though I personally hope to hear more of the older stuff (can I get Flanigan’s Ball, please?) than I did on the actual 11 Short Stories tour. Their show at The Paramount on that run was phenomenal and easily one of my favorite shows, but you can read more about that at the link above.

For Rancid’s end, they also released a new album this year. We don’t have much on it other than the name, Trouble Maker, but it’s a Rancid album so it should be full of bad ass punk songs that will no doubt send their fans into a frenzy when finally played live.  I’ve never seen Rancid live, but I also never got too heavily invested in the punk scene until it started making a comeback the last few years. That said, though, From Boston to Berkeley promises to be a fun-filled tour full of skull-cracking punk tunes and lots of moshing, and we’re super excited for the NYC date on 8/6.
