Brit rockers Nothing But Thieves sold out The Gramercy Theater in NYC on Wednesday night, which is of zero surprise given their massive popularity in England and other parts of the UK, and performed 17 tunes off their two albums – the second of which, Broken Machine just came out in September – before the capacity crowd that came out on hump day to unwind and support the boys from across the pond.
Because my goal is to write shorter reviews and be able to spend more time working on other projects, I’m going to skip the fluff and get right into the substance and hopefully keep this under 4 paragraphs. Nothing But Thieves, led by guitarist and lead vocalist Conor Mason‘s powerful vocals and hard rock riffs, took the stage with I’m Not Made by Design and played Live Like Animals and Trip Switch before we were unceremoniously given the boot from the photo pit to watch the rest of the show like commoners , and really, the only place to watch a sold-out show is in the thick of things with the masses.
Jumping around a bit, the unquestioned highlight of the night was the band’s cover/obligatory tribute to the late Tom Petty with their take on his hit song Free Fallin’, which damn near had me in tears. I’ve always loved that song, I’ve been listening to it a lot since Petty died and obviously hearing a ton of covers, but something about this one was unique and special. Maybe because it was my first time hearing it live and thinking how I wish I’d had gotten to photograph Tom Petty this past summer, but it was just that good. Some of the other numbers Nothing But Thieves churned out include Hostage, Graveyard Whistling, Hanging, If I Get High, Ban All The Music and Sorry.
Closing up shop for the night with Amsteradm, Nothing But Thieves left no question as to why this show was sold out. For a band with only two albums to have reached the kind of popularity they’ve achieved overseas and be able to sell out a Wednesday night show, this is just the beginning. Venues like Gramercy Theater won’t be able to hold them much longer, they’re already written some great music and put on an even better live show. The best is yet to come for Nothing But Thieves, and they’re definitely one worth watching. Check out the photo gallery below.
