Guns N’ Roses Reunion Tour Opening Acts Announced

Guns N Roses have finally announced the opening acts for their long-awaited reunion tour, and while Alice In Chains will be opening some of the dates, they’re unfortunately not on the entire tour. What we do get, however, is somewhat of a strange combination of acts who will combine to form an interesting tour for the legend that is GnR. Let’s run down the list and then we’ll talk about what we’re getting here:

  • The Cult
  • Lenny Kravitz
  • Skrillex
  • Billy Talent
  • Chris Stapleton

Alright, so let’s start with Lenny Kravitz. Lenny is Lenny, you know what you’re getting with him: a  blues-based, funk-rock and a lot of strutting around on stage. Lenny puts on a good show and is a great choice to warm up the crowd for Guns N Roses. I like this one a lot, and it would be a lot more interesting if Slash comes out to do Always On The Run, which he wrote and Kravitz performed. Moving on, The Cult and Billy Talent are alright choices. I’m more a fan of The Cult than anything Billy Talent has ever done, but it’s a tolerable selection. The Cult should be cool to see live. Chris Stapleton, I had to Google this guy to find out who he is. Turns out, he’s a country/bluegrass singer/songrwiter who has been around for quite a while. I’m not sure how this one is going to go over, because let’s be real here, country fans are not going to a Guns N Roses show. Will they buy tickets to GnR because Chris Stapleton is opening? Maybe? I really don’t know, but it seems like an odd choice at best. Still, it’s not the worst choice on the above list.

So we’ve got a mix of funk, blues, rock and country. And then there’s Skrillex….what the hell was Axl thinking with this one? I say Axl because you just know this one was his decision, having evidently learned nothing from the failed experiment that was Mix Master Mike, who was boo’d night after night for an entire tour in what was probably one of the worst opening act choices in history. Don’t get me wrong, I love Mix Master Mike, but he should be fighting for his right to party alongside the Beastie Boys. That didn’t end well and I can’t see Skrillex winning over a crowd of hostile metalheads either.

This is where we are right now with the Guns N Roses reunion tour. The highlight of the opening acts is absolutely going to be Alice In Chains, without question, but it’s worth nothing that there are still a few dates for which the openers have yet to be announced. I’ve heard rumors being tossed around that Slash could pull double duty and open the show with Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators, which would be all kinds of awesome and would have me in the front row at Metlife Stadium in New Jersey come July.
